Seeing is Believing, or Believing is Seeing?

It was a brisk fall afternoon and a young Dad was taking his daughter to an empty parking lot for a chance to practice riding her bicycle in a wide open space … without training wheels. In this huge, paved area there were no cars, and one solitary light pole … the perfect spot! However, from the very beginning, the young girl kept saying “what if I run into the pole?”

For several minutes, she peddled and rode her little bicycle around the parking lot cautiously and uneventfully. All the while, she kept saying to her Dad  “I’m going to hit the light pole … I’m going to hit the pole” She deeply believed that it was impossible to avoid hitting the light pole.

You will not be surprised to learn that she did run into the light pole! (fortunately she was unhurt)

This story is a good reminder of the phenomenon associated with the power of focus and belief … the uncanny way they have of transforming us as well as our situation. If  for example, you are currently focused on creative ways to share your gift and message with the world, then you are probably moving steadily toward achieving that goal. On the other hand, if you are living in dread and fear that you are not good enough; that you don’t know enough; that you will never attract your ideal clients; not to mention your ideal career opportunities, you are already moving steadily in the negative direction.

There is a quote from the Proverbs that brings this into focus “As a person thinks in their heart, so are they”.  Speaker and author, Mike Dooley has also coined a phrase – “Thoughts become things …. Choose the good ones”.  Someone recently suggested that rather than “Seeing is Believing” the phrase should state that  “Believing is Seeing” because we as human beings will go to such great lengths to prove that our beliefs are valid and true!

If your perspective, and thought patterns are not what you would like them to be, rather than become defensive or start beating yourself up, simply pause … take a deep breath and acknowledge the fact that these patterns have evolved and developed for a reason … to keep you safe and to protect you from harm. Unfortunately, many perspectives, beliefs and thought patterns create unnecessary delays, struggles and difficulty.

Thankfully, there are ways to rewrite old psychological programs and allow yourself to experience a kind of upgrade. When this is done, you find that you are more aware when disempowering beliefs and negative perspectives try to “run the show”.   In addition to that, you realize that you are able to create the positive shifts needed to assure that you are moving in the positive direction of your dreams and goals!

The year 2020 has tried and tested us in ways that we could not have imagined only a few months ago.  More and more I keep hearing “Thanks To Covid-19”  and it occurs to me that we can get lost in an attitude of regret and loss and essentially miss a world of possibilities and opportunities that exists all around us.

Rather than stay mired with the regret and loss, we make a change!  If you are ready to take your attention off the negative situation or condition that is troubling you and place it on something positive, here are three great suggestions from “Awaken The Giant Within” by Tony Robbins:

All personal breakthroughs begin with a change in beliefs.”

  1. “The most effective way to change a belief is to get your brain to associate massive pain with the old belief.”
  2. “You must feel deep in your gut that not only has this belief cost you pain in the past, but it’s costing you in the present and ultimately can only bring you pain in the future.”
  3. “Then you must associate tremendous pleasure with the idea of adopting a new empowering belief.”

Basically, when you realize the old beliefs are no longer serving you, you can intentionally add these simple steps to your life and start moving in a positive direction.  You have the power within you!
